Benjamin Britten – War Requiem

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of one thousand nine hundred and eighteen, the guns of World War One fell silent. Throughout the world people celebrated and mourned in equal measure.

In December 2018, Swansea Philharmonic Choir commemorated the one hundred years since Armistice Day with a performance of one of the most important musical compositions of the twentieth century.

Benjamin Britten’s WAR REQUIEM is a massive statement of the futility and suffering of war and a moving tribute to the dead of two World Wars. It was first performed at the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral – itself a symbol of renewed faith and hope after the desperation and despoliation of the war years. Britten’s powerful music, the words of the Mass and poems from Wilfred Owen, the foremost World War I poet, combine to create a moving and unforgettable experience.

Our concert, in the Brangwyn Hall last Sunday 2nd of December, was both a celebration of peace and a commemoration of all those who suffered – and continue to suffer – from the effects of war. Two orchestras, a children’s choir and three soloists joined Swansea Philharmonic Choir to make this a unique and very special concert.

My subject is War, and the pity of War.

The Poetry is the pity…

All a poet can do today is warn.
