Light and Majesty: An Evening of Sacred Music

At the Brangwyn Hall, on Saturday, 12th April 2025, the Swansea Philharmonic Choir and British Sinfonietta, conducted by Jonathan Rogers, performed Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass and Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor. Our soloists were Cressida Sharp, Nina Bennet, Osian Wyn Bowen and Emyr Wyn Jones.

Our Chair, Hazel Phillips, commented that Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass was ‘sensitively sung’ and Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor was ‘performed with spirit’. Judging by comments from both choir and audience members, there was much agreement with Hazel that the soloists were superb and that the British Sinfonietta was on ‘top form’.

As a choir we were very happy to be able to perform the concert to such an appreciative audience and especially so, to have introduced Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass to those who had not had the opportunity to experience the composer’s exquisite sound. We were honoured to have been sent good wishes from Ola Gjeilo himself for our concert.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Jonathan Rogers, our conductor and musical director, for his inspiring leadership throughout the term. Also, thank you to Chris Samuel for his invaluable support as our accompanist during rehearsals.
